the city. parts of the city subway system not flooded with water reopened with limited service today. about 25% of new jersey is still under water trapping thousands of residents. >> two maryland ambulance strike teams headed out today to help with the recovery efforts in new jersey. crews went to egg harbor township. they will be assisting in patient evacuations and 911 emergency responses. among the most recent to be killed, five people in west virginia. some areas got hit with more than 2 feet of snow. one of the victims, a republican candidate for the west virginia state house. he was killed in an accident. still there you are seeing new jersey video. now you are seeing west virginia and the snowy situation brought on by sandy. the tragic scope of that

part of the storm, two ofthose deaths happened in barber county. and joining us cindy heart, director of emergency services. thanks for joining us. i know it's a difficult day. thanks for joining us by phone. >> you're welcome. >> i want to talk about the fatalities most. some of us felt like we dodged the brunt of the storm. but reports coming out of the tragedies happening in west virginia. can you tell us about the deaths, please? >> we've had 4 total deaths in two days. two of them have been confirmed to be storm related. one was the candidate that you were speaking about just a minute ago. he was trying to clear his driveway on his property and an accident happened. i'm not sure about the details. >> that is john rose senior who did lose his life in this storm. we understand you had 18 inches of snow.

6 foot snow drifts. also, the main road s were closed down. tell us what is the status right now. >> right now, the main roads are clear. none of the secondary roads have been touched. i have national guard crews out now and they are trying to get the roads open. >> the power. we reported 90% of the county no power in these temperatures. >> correct. >> when you see a storm of this scope, it's hard to ask where you begin. but let me ask you what your office is dog. >> the first thing we did was start to open shelters to get people warmed and you happen out of the environment they were in. the next thing was to get them food and water. the third is clear the roadways and get the

ults restore -- utilities restored. it's a compnding problem. >> if i'm direct, you are also the 911 director. >> yes, ma'am. >> are folks able to get the help they need, the emergency help. how are the 911 lines? >> been very busy. we've taken 10 times calls as we normally do. i've got 60% of my county without phone service. i'm sure we're not receiving all of our 911 calls. >> tragic situation. we will stay on top of this story. thank you for taking a couple moments out to let the viewer ship know what you are dealing with. >> thank you. >> now to our top local stories. an investigation underway to determine what caused a large warehouse fire overnight. >> crews were called to the scene late last night and

battled the flames and smoke for heavy hours. been there all morning and has the latest. >> good morning. we are seeing that investigators are now just being able to go and get at look at some of the damage inside. up until this point haven't been able to get inside to see whether there perhaps may be victims. don't believe there are any victims inside from what they knew last night. want to also let you know that they also had to come up here a little earlier, maybe like around 7:00 this morning, there were still hot spots and firefighters had to climb back up and cut through metal doors and also had to try to knock down brick and open up ventilation. we are seeing a little bit of smoldering at this hour. let's go and show you also what it looked like last

night. this is when things were really getting underway. the fire started about 10:30. looks like it started in the wholesale warehouse. this is attached to an old building that dates back to 1931. the old union tminal market. and firefighters said it was really a tense situation. when you have these old warehouses, lots of materials that can burn and cause things to get tense quickly. that is what happened last night when there was one alarm. 50 firefighters had to be quickly evacuated. called for a second alarm. 120 firefighters showed up on scene here. had to run extra hoses and supply lines. and they really were pouring water on this all morning long to knock it down. and again, as you see, there were some investigators here and hot spots as well. the good news is that nobody that we know of was

injured. >> thank you, melanie. the election is right around the corner now. we want to remind you early voting is extended through tomorrow in maryland and through saturday in dc after a two day suspension due to hurricane sandy. last minute push for the presidential candidates. as the ads play on your tv, what's true and what's not? joining us is jonathan strong with role call and we've been doing this for several weeks back checking these ads to kind of help the voters and the viewers understand what's real, what's not. thanks for coming in. are they getting more and more aggressive and can we expect more of the same in the last few days? >> there's a few instances where the ads are pushing the envelope a little more than we've been seeing.

one of the thoughts, the strategies here is that it doesn't catch up with you in time for election day. you have to be really careful about the ads in the last few days. >> i personally, i almost completely ignore the ads just because of that. another candidate doesn't have time to refute it. we were going to go through specific ads so we can talk about them. first ad is a pro romney ad talking about romney will do more for the auto industry and accused president obama of shipping thousands of jobs to china. let's take a look. >> who will do more for the auto industry? not barack obama. his attacks on mitt romney are false. the truth? mitt romney has a plan to help the auto industry. he's supported by the detroit news. obama took gm and chrysler into bankruptcy.

>> before i get you to comment on it. i'm going to go to the obama ad. it is a response to this ad. obama ad called collapsed. it's a rebutle to this ad. >> when the auto industry faced collapse, mitt romney turned his back. even the conservative detroit news criticized romney for wrongheadedness on the bailout. and now, after romney's false claim of jeep out sourcing to china. >> here's what i want to know. i don't know the answer. and this is a good example. one of them's got to be wrong. who is wrong? >> well , the romney ad is technically true but misleading. one of the things he claims, it goes on to say that chrysler is going to increase production of jeeps in china. and turns out they are increasing production of jeeps in the u.s. and in china. and you are left with

the misleading impression that they are moving jobs from the u.s. to china. in fact, they are increasing production in both places. >> okay. >> there's another couple factors. one is the detroit news of romney. romney 's right to say -- they criticized his policies and supported obama's policies. on the issue of the auto bailout, they supported obama. >> okay. so once again, there's truth in both ads. >> yeah. it's complicated. >> it is . i guess in many of these ads, they are stretching the truth or leaving out key facts. they are not necessarily out right lies. >> right. that's the big thing thing. you are not getting the full context. >> okay. let's go to another ad. this is going to be pro romney. this one is getting a lot of play. a woman says she went on the internet to find out what romney's views were. >> those ads say mitt romney

would ban all abortions and contraceptions seemed extreme. i looked into it. turns out romney doesn't oppose contraception at all. he thinks abortion should be an option in cases of rape, incest or to save a mother's life. >> she goes on to say that besides for her it's really all about the economy. talk to me about this. is there truth in here? >> this ad is broadly speaking true. no politician is proposing to ban contraception. the issue here is rule instituted by the obama administration that forced employers including religious employers like catholic hospitals to pay for contraception in the healthcare plans. romney opposed that. obama supported it. in terms of whether that will be available, that's not true. romney's position is he opposed abortion in all cases as of rape, incest and when the life of the mother

is at risk. he's changed his opinion overtime from being firmly pro choice in the 90s when he ran for senate to becoming pro-life and at one point in a debate in 2007 said that he would sign a law to ban all abortions but he said that is not political sociable or desirable. >> you can pull anything you want. one of the most dramatic ads is pro obama ad building the stage. let's take a look. >> out of the blue one day we were told to build a 30 foot stage. gathered the guys and we built that 30 foot stage not knowing what it was for. just days later, all three shifts were told to assemble in the warehouse a group of people walked out on that stage and told us that the plant is now

closed and all of you are fired. >> we have actually tried to find how that story actually played out. tell me what you know about this ad. >> this is a very kind of important and infamous episode in bane capital where the company bought ampad which is a paper company and shut down a plant in indiana and as part of that, at one point they fired all of the employees and invited them they could apply to work there at lower wages. and i think this is the plant that we're talking about. now, i looked long and hard and mitt romney's campaign has not responded or commented on the specific details on this ad. it's a person's firsthand account of it. we're going to have to rule that is true. >> we can't find either. we've tried to look what's the story here. okay. so you rule it

that may impact. let's just get right to it. what kind of impact with the super storm or will it have on this election? already seen them changing campaign strategy. >> we've got five days before people exercise this most cherished right to vote. but in that time, we've seen some powerful imagery coming off. we've seen governor kristy, and president obama having this bromance talking about issues. it's importantbecause of one of mitt romney's powerful closing arguments is he can bridge the partisan divide. you see in the imagery between the president and governor they are working in a bipartisan way. they don't have to tell it. they show it. that potentially is a very strong momentum builder for the president into next tuesday. we're going to talk about the impact of sandy, then about other things.

for example, governor romney has a provocative ad in ohio. some think he's taking a huge risk. we're going to see if that has impact. look at their closing arguments today. and the class is going to decide on electoral college map. >> how accurate have you been in the past? >> the class was very good four years ago. they beat me. >> do they all get a's? don't answer that. >> on their prediction. >> let's ask some of the young voters about some of this. what do think about the storm how the storm impacts this election? >> i don't think it really will. in new york, you might see the numbers be a bit smaller. obama is still of course going to carry away with a win with new york. interesting to see the numbers in new york city. a lot of flooding in lower manhattan.

curious if the polling stations will be there. >> what about you? >> i think it will affect it a little bit. it's sad what happened. new york and new jersey states that weren't a contest. i don't think it will be too much of an affect. but great to see the president work with the republicans and the whole disaster being a nonpartisan thing. >> let's get over and ask two more students. what do you think about the bromance? do you think that will have an impact on voters when they see them working together? >> i think absolutely. but aside from bridging the divide. the president is using this as a chance to look like a leader. sitting there in that fema chair, he looks like a leader. bringing people together. and encouraging them to fix this mess. >> what about you? >> i think it will definitely have somewhat of an impact. people really hate the

welcome back. a lot of damage from this week's storm caused by falling tree limbs and some that remain intact suffered damage of their own. what should homeowners do to protect before the next storm in? our garden expert joins us now with that. what is your twitter handle, sir? >>@thomasgardenguy. we have great tips on how to protect your trees. >> let's do some of the highlights now. right now it's all about clean up. my heart goes out to all of the people who were affected by this storm.

it's devastating. what we can do with our plants. first, you've got to start addressing. maybe there's a limb that looks fractured. if you can actually see the limb has been broken, i saw this after the duracho, people had taken string and tried to tie the tree limb back together. don't do that. the tree will heal itself but be a weakened limb. if it needs to be cleaned off, make clean cuts on the tree. make sure the pruning sheers are good pruning sheers. and, i also saw this just yesterday. there was a guy with a small chainsaw cutting up a limb that had fallen and his son is running around behind

him. put that over to the professionals. bite the bullet. get a professional involve d. one of the things i want to stress to the viewers, this little baby ginco here, it's a cute 1 foot tree. in less than a year it's going to become over a two foot tree. one of the things you want to take care when you are picking out a small tree like this, know the tree. these are notorious for limb damage. >> the limbs are weaker? >> they will snap off in storms. they are beautiful trees and have a beautiful yellow color in the fall. the other thing you want to look for is a straight trunk. this tree has a very crooked truck. this is never going to get straight and going to become a weakened link in a

storm. stop planting big trees. this is another g inco and now almost a 6 foot tree. >> can i say one thing? that sneaks up on you. i was looking at pictures of my house. >> stop planting trees like this within 100 feet of your house. you can plant dogwoods, yoshino cherries. plant medium sized trees closer to your home. bigger trees farther away if you have the property. a tree like this is not one i would plant in any case because this tree does not have a proper lead. what the lead is is the middle trunk that comes up and right here there's been some kind of damage. now it has four or five different parts vying to be the lead. what's going to happen is

all of these may end up branching off on the own and the scare crow tree. it becomes top heavy. and in the future, it's going to give you problems. you can attempt to give it back a principle lead by taking this out. and i know this seems harsh. but take this out like this. the tree is still a juvenile tree. prune your juvenile trees properly. this will become the stronger lead and you still have a chance of having this tree become a really nice straight strong tree. >> excellent. that is very helpful. that is good stuff. >> but when in doubt, consult an expert. these bigotries they are beautiful. we need them. but around your home , start thinking about planting smaller trees. and pepco has really great tips on what to plant for
